Creation of common facility centre (Food Testing Laboratory) at Pune under Cluster Development Programme of UNIDO
Under cluster Development Program of UNIDO Pune Foods and Agro Processing was one of the four clusters selected for cluster intervention. The need to set up a technical and analytical centre came up during the first cluster level workshop held in 1997. In the absence of a forum, which could visualise this happen, UNIDO supported the local firms to create COFIT which could articulate the demand for a laboratory (along with various other issues) of the cluster and gather support for the same. A consensus was also built on the issue, that the proposed laboratory would work in the areas of product testing, (quality control & quality assurance), product development and training in an integrated manner. To create confidence of local industry in the initiative, an MOU was signed with Food Research and Analysis Centre (FRAC), New Delhi. Private contributions were raised by explaining to the industry the importance of such a laboratory through frequent meetings and technical inputs from the experts.

Finally, the work for the physical creation of the laboratory started in May 2001. The laboratory was inaugurated in August 2002. The laboratory has been named as National Agriculture and Food Analysis and Research Institute (NAFARI) and working successfully. Mr. Rajveer Singh was involved in UNIDO's activity in Pune Food Processing cluster from 1999-2003.
